The Waimapu Stream catchment covers 11,164 ha with approximately 50% in pasture and over 30% in indigenous vegetation. Less than 10% of the catchment is in exotic forestry and there is increasing urban development in the lower catchment. The catchment geology is dominated by volcanism with Mamaku and Waimakariri ignimbrites in the east and the older Waiteariki ignimbrite to the east.
Water quality monitoring occurs at the Pukemapui Bridge approximately 1.5 kilometres upstream of the Waimapu Estuary. Declining pH is the only significant trend identified to date and this has occurred since 2007.
