The Uretara River begins in the Kaimai Ranges and has a catchment area of 32.9 sq km ending in the Tauranga Harbour near Katikati The catchment geology is dacite and Coromandel andesite in the upper reaches with river sediments in the lower reaches. Almost half of the catchment is covered in indigenous vegetation with less than one third in pasture and the rest in horticulture and exotic forest.
Water quality monitoring occurs at Henry Road. While there are no significant water quality trends recent data suggests there may be a reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus levels.
