Mount Maunganui

The largest industrial area in the Western Bay of Plenty is centered around the Port of Tauranga at Mt Maunganui and Sulphur Point. There are a number of monitoring sites in this area looking at a range of contaminants. Some of these monitoring stations have recorded exceedances of the National Environment Standards for Air Quality for PM10 and SO2. There are a number of dusty activities that operate in the Mount Maunganui Industrial Area including fertiliser plants, concrete manufacturers and dry bulk material distributors (such as those that distribute palm kernel).

While there are a number of monitoring sites in the Mount Maunganui airshed, the Totara Street site has been chosen for the representative Town Summary for its central location and as the longest data collection site in the area (since 2005).

In many towns in New Zealand, PM peaks in the winter when air temperatures and wind speeds are lowest as more people heat their homes during colder weather, and still conditions mean that there is no wind to disperse the air pollutants.
