The Takapuna monitoring station was established in May 1995 and currently monitors PM10, PM2.5, and NO2. The air quality at this station is generally good for most of the time. The main sources of air pollution are vehicle emissions, particularly at busy roadsides, and residential home heating during winter. The monitored concentrations of CO and NO2 meet national environmental standards for air quality. Usually, PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations also meet national environmental standards for air quality and guidelines, although occasional exceedances do occur.
